Advancing Ocean Health Science and Management on Marine Microbes
Providing Expert research and advisory services on marine microbes from plankton to benthos
Tiny Ocean: Marine Microbial Science for a Sustainable Ocean
Microbes support our ocean services but are under-represented in marine assessments but increasingly needed in marine regulation or research deliverables. Tiny Ocean Health Insights has specialist expertise in marine microbiological to provide ecological insights in Pelagic waters using simple, workable metrics to help you with ecological impact assessments, plan your project and improve impact of research for policy.
Our Mission
TOHI specialize in marine microbiology and ecology, providing expert insights into ocean microbes and smaller marine creatures to support conservation, biodiversity research, and sustainable ocean management.
Our Vision
TOHI envision a world where scientific understanding of marine microbes informs policies and practices, ensuring the long-term health and resilience of ocean ecosystems.
Our Values
TOHI work is guided by a commitment to ethical research, collaborative partnerships, and innovative solutions that address complex marine challenges.
Our Team
TOHI multidisciplinary team combines scientific rigor with practical experience, collaborating with government agencies, universities, and regulatory bodies to advance ocean health.
Our Story
Tiny Ocean Health Insights have nearly 20 years experience in marine microbiology working for academic, regulatory and business environments, bridging the gap between scientific research and actionable solutions for ocean sustainability and health.
Expert Scientific Support for Ocean Health and Sustainability
Tiny Ocean Health Insights was founded by Dr. Rowena Stern-Kluckner (published name Rowena Stern) with 20 years experience investigating genetic biodiversity and ecology of microorganisms through optical, genetic methods on long-term time series. She has contributed to 55 publications, 9 book chapters and multiple science advisory documents
Tiny Ocean Health is a proud member of the Defra Pelagic Habitat Expert Group Working Group, a collaborative group of scientists and managers, creating advanced tools to measure and conserve core functioning of UK seas. We lead efforts to assess and ultimately incorporate the smallest plankton for the UK Marine Strategy Framework Directive using simple, workable metrics to assess ecological impacts of human activity on the health of UK seas. Tiny Ocean Health also member of an international voluntary science advisory providing advice and tools on plankton health and research for the North Atlantic working with over 20 marine monitoring organisations and an Honorary Fellow at Plymouth Marine Laboratory.
Our consulting services assist regulatory bodies, researchers, businesses and other stakeholders in implementing ecosystem-based management approaches, integrating microbial data to support sustainable ocean resource use.
For more information on prior publications see our Google Scholar articles and science advisory reports one and two.
Project design
From student projects, grant proposals or conservation initiatives, we have a wealth of experience in technical and data analysis methods to assist your project deliverables at any budget. Our expertise is in DNA barcoding, challenging DNA extraction from environmental samples, microbiology culturing, eDNA, environmental genomics, quantitative genetics, data analysis of all microbial datasets. We can help you plan your project end to end.
Scientific Training and Capacity Building
We provide training programs for your staff and researchers on sampling to detection using DNA methods, assistance on survey planning, and experimental design to foster informed decision-making in ocean health initiatives. Marine management planning for pelagic systems is complex. We have expertise in measuring pelagic plankton systems to help your team understand and assess the impact of any work in relation to marine policy.
Project management
With experience managing small and large, international projects from UKRI to EU and with international collaborators, we can provide additional outsourced support for your project in a timely way and ensure management reflects the budget requirements needed.
Data analysis and interpretation
We have extensive experience in ecological analysis of marine microbial communities, from flow cytometry, DNA, RNA and microscopy sources to assess species detection, community biodiversity, temporal change. We have specialised tools to create simplified, usable tools and targets to assess ecosystem health, informing conservation strategies and policy development.
